Dance at Rosehill

Dance is offered as an NCEA subject at all levels, featuring opportunities for students to participate in dance shows, school productions, competitions, and cheerleading.

Dance at Rosehill College stimulates creativity and fosters self-expression, all while building confidence. In addition to our rich and dynamic curriculum, we offer a range of extra-curricular dance activities, including:

  • NZ Street Dance Megaschool Competition: students compete against other Auckland schools in this prestigious Hip Hop competition held in central Auckland.
  • 'Ascension' Contemporary Dance Group: students develop a repertoire of contemporary dances showcased at the Auckland Cheerleading Competitions.

All senior dance classes, performances, and practices take place in our Performing Arts Centre, which features a purpose-built sprung dance floor.

Drama at Rosehill

Rosehill College's Drama programme boasts a history of academic success and numerous awards. Our highly regarded and inspirational teachers lead annual productions, participate in festivals, theatresports, drama school, and oversee the technical aspects of performances.

Drama at Rosehill College fosters critical literacy, enabling students to shape, communicate, and interpret meaning while gaining a deeper understanding of themselves and others. Our diverse extra-curricular activities include:

  • Annual school production/musical: renowned for high-quality plays and musicals, Rosehill College offers students the chance to perform on stage and receive training as backstage crew, lighting and sound teams, props and set makers, and show band members. Held at the Hawkins Theatre in Papakura, these productions provide a semi-professional theatre experience. Our productions have won awards in the Auckland Showdown competition, including Best Props Design (Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe 2011, Fiddler on the Roof 2012) and Best Set Design (The Witches 2013).
  • Theatresports: students master the art of improvisation and compete in the Auckland Theatresports Festival. Rosehill College won the Auckland Shield in 2012 and continues to produce strong teams annually.
  • Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival: both student and teacher-directed pieces are entered into this national competition, where students perform scenes before a judging panel. Winners advance to the finals in Wellington and may be selected to visit The Globe Theatre in London.
  • Talent Quest: organised by Rosehill College's Arts Committee, this event showcases the diverse talents of our students at the Hawkins Theatre. Performances include Hip Hop and Contemporary dancers, bands, singers, and stand-up comedians.

Music at Rosehill

At Rosehill College, students can study vocals and band as subjects, and take weekly instrument lessons. Our bands, ensembles, and choirs rehearse regularly to enhance their skills, preparing for competitions and tours both in New Zealand and internationally, with past destinations including Sydney, Argentina, Singapore, and China. Our bands have advanced in Rockquest, performed at Eden Park, and our composers have had their works performed by orchestras.

We offer courses at all levels for vocalists and instrumentalists, accommodating both students who can read music and those who cannot. Students enrolled in Music courses can receive free weekly vocal or instrumental lessons from expert itinerant music teachers (subject to availability).

All students are encouraged to join co-curricular music groups once they reach the necessary level.

Creative arts

A large number of students at Rosehill College engage in painting, printmaking, designing, and photography, participating in art exhibitions, auctions, and competitions, with several achieving national recognition.

The Art Department at Rosehill College boasts a long tradition of academic excellence. Housed in a modern, centrally-designed building, it features four purpose-built art rooms, two computer suites, a printing bay, and a photographic studio, providing excellent facilities for students.

Our department is both large and vibrant, benefiting from the expertise of specialist staff and the diversity of courses offered. Junior programmes lay a solid foundation in both creative and technical skills, while senior students can choose from five visual art disciplines: painting, photography, design, printmaking, and sculpture. Additionally, art history is available at Levels 1, 2, and 3.

Each year, many students from the department pursue tertiary qualifications or careers in the creative arts. The work of our students is celebrated through four annual exhibitions showcasing both junior and senior achievements within the school calendar.

Culture and voice

Kapa haka, Pasifika and student voice

Kapa haka: our Māori Arts co-ordinator and tutors nurture unique talents, enabling students to perform at festivals and participate in overseas tours.

Pasifika: students and families dedicate their efforts to different Pacific Island cultural groups, ensuring vibrant performances at festivals.

Debating and public speaking: our teams compete in inter-secondary school debating competitions and participate in speech contests in both English and Māori.

Arts Council: the Arts Council, one of Rosehill College's four main student councils, is led by a head student. The Council organises house competitions, including wearable arts, pavement art, talent quests, and 'dancing with the staff', and actively supports all performing arts activities within the College.
